The event took place between Jon Jones, an American mixed martial artist who is considered to be one of the greatest Light Heavyweight champions and Chael Sonnen, who is currently the MMA analyst for ESPN. Sonnen was also an MMA champion who began his career in 1997 and retired in 2019 because of the controversy he faced based on failed drug tests. The bout between Jones and Sonnen in 2013 resulted in Sonnen losing the fight as the statistics had shown that Jones had landed 81.4% of the total strikes as opposed to Sonnen who had only landed 74.5%. The event that took place between the two champions eight years ago has recently gained a lot of popularity as Jon Jones just a month ago on 17th May 2020 started a Twitter battle against Sonnen. Sonnen saw this post and countered him by starting a Twitter rant against the two-time undisputed Light Heavyweight champion. Sonnen saw this post and countret him by starting a twitter rant againt the double champion and the two time rant champion Jon jones versc Cheal sonnen and the most important thing is that the Jon Jones fans ouldnt believe how much of a starting pack people may have. UFC 159, An MMA takedown that triggered the ultimate twitter war:
The UFC light Heavyweight championship that everyone had been waiting for, finally took place on 27th April 2013. Jones and Sonnen bumped gloves and the ultimate showdown began. The bout started with Sonnen landing a front kick targeted at his opponent’s rib cage. Thinking quickly Jones countered Sonnen’s attack and quickly landed a takedown. Sonnen fell on his back with Jones relentlessly struggling to keep him down on the ground. The two got back up on their feet as Sonnen escaped. Both of them were able to land a few solid punches at each other’s torso but to Sonnen’s disadvantage, Jones had the upper hand in the bout. Jones was able to perform a second takedown but this
time he managed to land a brutal elbow attack right at Sonnen’s face. In previous fights Jones had used similar elbow attacks which were considered illegal however he was still able to land a win. Vitor Belfort was the only mixed martial artist who was able to defend himself from Jones 12 to 6 elbow strikes. Sonnen once again was able to escape his opponent’s takedown but then Jones forcefully rammed Sonnen towards the cage which resulted in Sonnen performing a guillotine choke on John’s neck. Chael Sonnen had claimed that he was a Republican and also quoted that “Republicans don’t lie on their back with men between their legs”. This quote by Sonnen had undoubtedly been very embarrassing for him based on the fact that Jones pulled a takedown for the third time.
Conclusion: What goes around comes around?
Although Chael Sonnen had lost the UFC 159 to Jon Jones, Jones in 2019 had decided to start a Twitter war against his former UFC opponent because of his tendency to “cause trouble”. He had also started online rants with other fighters in the past as well; however, Sonnen did not let Jones get the better of him thorough a social media platform. After their fight in 2013 Sonnen himself had said that Jon Jones was one of the greatest MMA champions of all time and Sonnen respected him to the extent that he compared Jones to Mohammad Ali or even better then him. However, despite all this Jones had forced his hand which made Sonnen post extreme counter attacks on Twitter such as the tweet he made regarding his drinking issues; “More Booze than David Crosby w/Ernest Hemingway sitting on his shoulders”.
